Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2
Rumours of Joan Collins as a bonus character proved untrue
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 combines the tactical fighting action of the Dynasty Warriors series and the mobile suits of Gundam to create an all new fighting experience.
This will probably do well off the back of the recent Transformers resurgence, but though Gundam is similarly about warring robots, you can't morph into anything. What you do have at your disposal are lasers, hand-to-hand melees, jet propulsion and special attacks that can wipe out several enemies at once.
If this is your first experience of either a Dynasty Warriors game or the Gundam anime series, both are in fact long running Japanese commodities from the 70's that have spawned numerous movies, comics, games and spin-off games. Westerners have Transformers. Japan has Gundam. We have Street Fighter. They have Dynasty Warriors. Capiche?
In 2007, the two sagas were merged for the first time in Dynasty Warriors: Gundam for the PS3/PS2/360. DW:G2 follows in the style of Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors with its zippy ground-based action where the player takes on hundreds of enemies in close combat. Since you're in a mecha suit instead of Samurai robes, this time there are also battles in space, so why are you still restricted to just horizontal movement? It's space! You should be able to move in any direction, surely!
Official Mode follows the storyline of the 1988 anime film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. You can play as Char, Judau, Amuro or Kamille ("Kamille's a man's name and I'm a man!" the girlie-looking warrior growls hilariously). You don't have a choice in what mobile suit you wear, until you've earned some serious Pilot Points in battle.
Essentially you're required to rid zones of Titan forces by destroying enough of their robots so that the rest malfunction. There are often Defense Commanders in these groups that are harder to beat, but once they're eliminated it will help clear a zone much faster. They're often name-tagged so you know what they are, but since the colour of their suits matches the other robots they can be difficult to keep track of - especially as the manual camera is impossible to use during melees unless you have a sixth finger handy (handy, geddit?).
