BBC To Enter Casual Gaming Market

The BBC have announced they are open to developer's ideas in creating games based on their most successful brands and with the platforms being discussed, it is clear which market they are aiming at. Doctor Who, Top Gear and In The Night Garden are some of the potential licences being mentioned, along with many others according to the broadcasters. The BBC wants to see title based games being released on the iPhone, DS, Wii and even through the social networking site, Facebook giving a clear indication that casual gamers are firmly on their radar.

Children's and Licensing MD Neil Ross Russell said, "We are open to conversations with anybody in games about all kinds of business models to see how we can extract more value." He continued, "What we're trying to do is build the brands here - this is not about opportunistic licensing. If we wanted to do that we would have done more with these key brands over the last few years."

Russell also commented that outside of Disney, the company have "the most well-known line-up of children's characters around the world." The BBC already operate some web-based games related to Tracey Beaker and Shaun The Sheep which gives you an idea of the type of games we are likely to see. Personally we would like a Match Of The Day based title. Preferably one that involves the virtual slapping of Alan Shearer and Mark Lawrenson, now that would be a game. (Note to self: File the copyright now!).
