Nintendo Vs Apple: Round 2

Claims last week that the iPhone and iPod Touch offered consumers more gaming options that the Wii or DSi has led to their creators Nintendo offering their own view on the debate. Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo Of America said that while the iPhone does offer more in terms of Apps, these are not as in depth as titles released on the Wii and DSi. Fils-Aime considers the App Store's offerings as 'bite-size' while Nintendo offers all round full packages for their customers.

Last weeks bold but technically accurate claims have triggered this response from Nintendo who say they want to 'continually innovate' in order to keep up with Microsoft and Sony in the gaming market. Fils-Aime was speaking in an interview on CNBC in which he challenged the claims. During the interview he said, "Consumers have only a limited amount of time for entertainment, so we compete with Apple. We compete with your program [on CNBC]; we compete with books and magazines; we compete with everything people do for entertainment. From that standpoint, we're battling it out minute by minute."

In an attempt to distinguish Nintendo from the App Store, Fils-Aime added, "While they have a lot of these applications, they're very small chunks of entertainment. What we do is, we provide a full meal in terms of a game you could play for hours on end, very deep very enriching, and that's why our handheld business has been doing so well all year long."

Can Apple really consider themselves up there with Nintendo when it comes to gaming? Yes there are a lot of Apps available when compared to Nintendo's limited library but how many of those Apps are bought, played from start to end and provide the same satisfaction as slaying Ganon or landing that fatal third blow on Bowser? Not many we assume. We think it will take a long old while before the App Store can consider itself in the same league as Nintendo.
