PopCap Games have announced that their ultra-addictive, gem matching puzzler Bejeweled is now celebrating it's tenth Birthday. The developers have also revealed that the title has sold over 50 million units since its release in 2000 which apparently puts the game in the top 10 best selling games ever. Incredibly, this equates to one copy sold every 4.3 seconds just in case you felt you needed some more Bejeweled-themed stats.
The game started life as Diamond Mine and we are now into a 10-month long celebration of the game's age and sales accomplishments. To kick off the party, PopCap have announced that they are to release Bejeweled Blitz, a social variant of the classic version that has already proved popular on Facebook and features in the iPhone version of Bejeweled 2. The chance for users to be invited to numerous competitions and promotions is also in motion.
Co-creator, Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Bejeweled, Jason Kapalka said, "Bejeweled has obviously succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. When Brian Fiete, John Vechey and I built the game ten years ago, we had no grand aspirations for it or PopCap, we were trying to survive as a company during the depths of the dot-com collapse. Little did we know we'd still be selling copies of Bejeweled a decade later!" Incredible stuff from the guys at PopCap. We say congratulations and good luck with your continued success with the game that has us losing entire evenings.
